1955年大阪府枚方市生まれ。’75年京都の摺師上杉桂一郎に師事し10年間修業の後、アーティストへの可能性に懸け’85年に渡米。アメリカの現代美術に強く感化され、彼の美意識と想像力が開花してゆく。
渡米初期には卓越した木版技術を駆使することによって抽象表現主義的世界を描き、前衛アーティストとして認められる。その後、風景画的作風へと変化してゆくが、単に風景を切り取ったものではなく、太古への回復、清謐、禅的、神話的な神秘的世界を展開し、高い評価を得る。
現在はニューヨークを始め全米各地、フランス、カナダなどで個展やワークショップを展開し国際的に活躍する傍ら、コネチカット州の名門ウエズリアン大学で教鞭をとり木版画と墨絵の指導に当っている。
今年6月凱旋個展が故郷の枚方市の主催で開催され、今回が日本での2回目の個展となります。是非御高覧ください。
Born in Osaka in 1955. Shinohara began studying traditional ukiyo-e hanga
techniques at the Kyoto studio of prominent woodblock printer Uesugi Keiichiro
in 1975. After six years of considerable hardship as an apprentice, Shinohara
was certified as a master printer and continued working for Uesugi until
1985, when he moved to the United States with an ambition to be recognized
as an artist himself. Since the late 80s, while working as a printmaker
for such international artists as Chuck Close, Sean Scully, and Balthus
among others, Shinohara has created his own works that combine refined
craftsmanship and exquisite visions, rivaling the most innovative artists
of our day. He has also taught Japanese printmaking at colleges including
San Francisco Art Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, and Wesleyan
University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he currently resides.
